Reconstructive Surgery

Plastic surgery is a specialty which includes both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

The goals of reconstructive surgery, (including microsurgery), differ from those of cosmetic surgery. Patients requiring reconstructive surgery always have a deficit of tissue, function or both that needs to be compensated. A &tissue defect& or a &functional deficit& can be caused by birth, trauma, infection, cancer or other diseases. In order to reconstruct such defects certain amounts of living tissues must be transported from one area of the body, named &donor area&, to the place of the defect. Finding the best equilibrium between tissue requirements of a defect and donor site morbidity makes this elaborate form of surgery an art. Furthermore, because most of the results of reconstructive surgery are quite visible, there is and there will always be an important cosmetic concern in every surgical reconstruction. In some cases, a procedure commonly thought to be aesthetic in nature may be performed to achieve a reconstructive goal; for instance, reduction of excessively large breasts,( reduction mammaplasty), is a reconstructive procedure designed to give a woman smaller, more comfortable breasts in proportion with the rest of her body.

    Fields of reconstructive surgery are:
  • Flaps and Microsurgery
  • Facial Injuries and Reconstruction
  • Head and Neck Cancer Reconstruction
  • Cleft/Lip Palate
  • Hand Surgery
  • Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerves Injuries and Reconstruction
  • Reconstruction after Skin Cancer
  • Upper and Lower Extremity Reconstruction
