This procedure improves the eyelids aspect as it eliminates the excess of skin in the eyelids and at the same time the fat deposits in the internal portion of the superior eyelids and in the inferior eyelids. These alterations, along with the fine lines in the lateral orbital area are early signs of face ageing. Some hereditary traits can influence the earliness and extent of these alterations.
The surgical procedure takes 1 to 3 hours end can be done under local or general anesthesia. The incisions are placed under the lash line for the inferior eyelids and in the supratarsal fold for the superior eyelids. Stitches are removed after 5 days. Most of the swelling and bruises disappear in 2-3 weeks. The lines of incision stay red for a couple of months, than become very thin, pale, and almost invisible.
Eyelid surgery can make a remarkable difference in the appearance of the face; the eyes appear fresher and more youthful. Rejuvenation of periorbital region can benefit in some cases from the association of blefaroplasty with forehead lift or brow lift, face lift or chemical peel (for dark circles and fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes).
